The following are the conclusions from the Farmed land analysis
Note:  All the base assumptions on this and the other two pages of this model (see above) are shown and are user definable. This means that if they are changed the conclusions below will automatically update.  Therefore if you have better information than the author of this model, you will be able to print off a report using your own assumptions.
Three of the key assumptions relate to the farmed land areas (i) privately owned; (ii) Maori land; and (iii) the price of carbon credits.

The figures used are:   Total farmed land     million hectares

          Maori farmed land     million hectares

Carbon credit value $   25.00   per tonne CO2e

        Conclusions

One of the key figures when attempting to assess the impact of the proposed Climate Change legislation on Maori land-owners is the relative "cost" in terms of sequestered carbon.  In other words, what is Maori being asked to contribute to the commitment the Government made in signing the Kyoto protocol per hectare.  More importantly, was this really understood at the time of signing?

Our estimate of emissions from animal farming suggests there needs to be equity considerations in any proposed allocation to farmers. Because of the financial and other limitations associated with Maori land development, farming land is well behind non-Maori farming land.          1
